Smoking ban hailed on birthday

Half million Italians have quit since its introduction (ANSA) - Rome, January 10 - Italy's ban on smoking in public places is being hailed as a massive triumph on the first anniversary of its introduction. Health Ministry experts said Tuesday that over half a million Italians had quit since the ban came into effect and that cigarette sales fell 5.7% between January and November 2005 with respect to the same period the year before .
