A New Tax with a Surprise: Nobody will Pay it Except Yesmoke

Silvio Berlusconi: "…I WANT TO TELL YOU A JOKE!"

The new law decree on cigarettes was made public  today. It turns out to be a “minimum tax… Italian style”, which would be paid only by a manufacturer who wants to sell below the limit fixed by the minimum price (that has just been  abolished by the  European Court sentence).

According to the Government’s tactics, since the tax makes it impossible to lower the price per pack, no one is likely to do so, and so, no one will pay the tax!

This latest joke of Berlusconi’s, effectively is a sort of “penalty” for anyone who might want to take advantage of the abolition of the minimum price; it was thought up by someone who does not give a damn about tax revenues. It is a fine, which, of course, no one is interested in paying … except Yesmoke that has presented a request to the AAMS to lower its pack prices to 3.60 euro. Read more »

The Minimum Price Sentence: Italy Convicted

Mazzetti di banconote Euro“The Italian Republic, imposing a minimum price for cigarettes, eluded the obligations incumbent on it.” The sentence has arrived: as was foreseen, the “prezzo minimo” is illegal.

Italy will have to pay penalties to the European Union and damages to Yesmoke. However, those who managed the minimum price affair are well aware that it will not be they who pay the penalties; neither will it be Philip Morris. The Italian State will have to shell out the money, that means, those poor bastards, the Italian taxpayers. Read more »

New York – A Pack of Cigarettes costs over 10.00 dollars

The Governor of the State, David Paterson,  reached an agreement with the State Legislature to increase the taxes on each pack of cigarettes by one dollar and sixty cents (1 euro and 30 eurocents).

New York Senate Minority Leader David Paterson of the 49th District

The Governor of the State, David Paterson

The least expensive brand, including state and federal taxes, will cost smokers more than  ten dollars  (about 8 euro e 50 cents) for 20 cigarettes.

In the United States, the single State takes in the entire amount when it increases taxes, even from Marlboros. The Italian “Minimum tax”, on the other hand, increases taxes on some brands and does not touch others, limiting, in this way, the income of the Italian State;  this is unknown and inconceivable across the ocean. "The Sting", Italian Style – Tax Increases, but not for All

18 June 2010: the Council of Ministers approved a Decree Law that abolished Italy’s “minimum price” on cigarettes and introduced a “minimum tax” in its place.

Consiglio dei MinistriFor brands in the high price range sold at 4.50 a pack, nothing will change: the same taxes, the same prices and especially, the same makers’ profits.

The tax will hit the cigarette manufacturers who sell at lower prices; if they want to make the same profits as before, they will have to raise their prices, bringing them up closer to those of Marlboros. Read more »

Cigarette Prices – What's Brewing?

On next 24th of June, the European Court of Justice will issue its sentence of condemnation of Italy for the Minimum Price of cigarettes. The prices of some brands will go down, and to avoid a loss of tax revenues, the Government will be forced to come up with compensation measures of a fiscal nature.

Calendario 24 giugno 2010According to the European Union, price increases must not be made with the minimum price system that increases the profits of the manufacturers but with taxes that enable the State to earn more.

This is why the European Court of Justice is obliging Italy to eliminate this iniquitous system. So, what are our politicians doing to get ready for this impending market revolution? Read more »

Philip Morris’s Latest Prank: Cigarettes & Gambling

La Marlboro slot machinePhilip Morris is actively promoting its products in tobacco shops by giving away a “gratta e vinci” - a scratchcard lottery ticket -  worth 5.00 euro to everyone who buys a carton of Marlboros “Gold Touch” for 41.00 euro.

At the same time, Italy’s Democratic Party is presenting a bill that would make it obligatory to include health warnings, like those printed on cigarette packs, on all «gratta e vinci» cards to warn consumers on the risks they run with gambling.

Here are a few examples: “Gambling creates strong dependency”, “Excessive gambling can lead to poverty”, “This game can damage your health”, “Protect your family, do not play excessively”, “Your doctor can help you stop gambling”…. Read more »

The F.I.T. and "The Authorized Promotions"

Logo della FITThe National Assembly of the Italian Tobacconists' Federation – Federazione Italiana Tabaccai (FIT), of last May 11th had as its guests the top management of Big Tobacco,  and politicians with the courtesy visit of Giulio Tremonti, Italy’s current Minister of Finance.

The judgment of Yesmoke, an Italian cigarette manufacturer, on this event is negative: it was an anachronistic show, the product of a degenerated system, which seems to rotate around the interests of a few foreign companies that hold 99% of the Italian market, and defend their privileges.
