Ten Cigarette Pack

Yesmoke is the only Italian producer opposed to the pack containing ten cigarettes.

Joe CamelOff-limits in the United States, in the European Union and in most of the countries of the third world because it fosters the brand loyalty of young people, the ten-cigarette pack persists in Italy, in spite of the fact that the Health Authorities - l'Istituto Superiore della Sanità - for some time have been asking for its abolition.

Italy seems to be one of the few countries where the tobacco multinationals, who count on young people, are able to do what they are not allowed to do at home.

A strategic business advantage of foreign manufacturers, no one knows the data regarding the sale of the ten-pack in Italy except Logista SpA distributor of the cigarettes, and the makers who prefer to keep the information to themselves. However, according to tobacconists, the ten-cigarette pack probably takes up about 25% of the market.

Why are packs of ten cigarettes always on the shelves of tobacco shops? Piergiorgio Zuccaro, director of the Smoke, Alcohol and Drug Observatory (Osservatorio Fumo, Alcol e Droga) of the Health Institute (Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), has repeatedly asked for the elimination of their sale.

Although it is obvious that smoking one pack of ten cigarettes per day is the same as smoking one pack of 20 cigarettes in two days, it is rather strange that Italy has not conformed, with its habitual enthusiasm, to the American and European “politically correct” position of a definite no to the pack of 10.

The Italian anomaly can be understood considering the fact that the State, on one hand, defends the minimum price of cigarettes (this too, fancy that, to the advantage of the multinationals!) saying that it is needed to discourage young people from buying low cost cigarettes, and at the same time, it safeguards the pack at half price.
